Buzz Bingo To Close 91 Retail Locations
The retail chain, Buzz Bingo, is due to close nine out of 91 retail locations as business declines and costs increase.
The closures will result in 2,456 of employees losing jobs, equivalent to 6.1% of the total workforce.
Buzz Bingo outlined numerous reasons behind the closures, primarily due to their struggle to recover following the pandemic.
Despite operating successfully pre-pandemic, the UK’s largest Bingo operator had no option but to close a quarter of their UK clubs due to what was described as an ‘unsustainable working environment’.
In November of 2020, the Salford Buzz Bingo was one of the clubs forced to close due to the pandemic. The closure had a significant impact on the local area, one mother and daughter claimed the club community became ‘like a family’, as the club became particularly favourable with the older generation who used it as an opportunity to socialise. Many were left worried that the closure would leave many isolated. In 2020, Buzz Bingo accounted permanent closure of 26 halls in the UK which put 573 jobs at risk.
After two years of lockdown the Buzz Bingo chain are still trying to recover as the post pandemic environment brings a new set of challenges. As seen with the leisure and hospitality sector, Buzz Bingo experienced a change in customer behaviour as less people were coming out and attending compared to pre-pandemic. Add on top of this the rising cost of living, many of the clubs were deemed no longer ‘financially viable’, as decline in numbers could not support the increased operational and energy costs. As of now, the following clubs are set to close; Surrey Quays, Dumfries, Grantham, Slough, Belle Vue, Bromborough, Carlisle, and Cumbernauld.
This is predicted to have a heart-breaking impact on local communities. Many individuals found comfort and enjoyment in the Bingo clubs, for many becoming a weekly enrichment. The clubs are known for their ability to bring communities together, socialise and meet new friends. This is especially devasting as the clubs offered a safe, warm and supportive space, particularly beneficial in the midst of the cost of living crisis.
Buzz Bingo CEO Dominic Mansour admits ‘these closures will, very sadly, impact a number of our colleagues and so our priority is to support all those affects and to do everything we can to minimise job losses’. However, Dominic states that the closures ‘will allow us to restructure the business for long term growth and to protect the livelihoods of our colleagues for the long run’.
